Trends in International Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) 2003 - 2015

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an assessment of the mathematics and science knowledge of fourth and eighth grade students around the world. TIMSS was developed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) to allow participating nations to compare students’ educational achievement across borders.

The Human Science Research Council (HSRC) participated in TIMSS from 1995 and were able to measure trend over a long period.  Results of the Grade 9 study show the improvement of the mathematics and science performance from 2003 to 2015 – so the system has moved from ‘very low’ performance to ‘low’ performance. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) were released in December 2016. TIMSS 2015 provides the ‘Highlights of Mathematics and Science Achievement of Grade 5 South African Learners’ and Highlights of Mathematics and Science Achievement of Grade 9 South African Learners’.
