The HEQC hosted a workshop on Universities of Technology on 22 September 2005, at the Tshwane University of Techology (TUT) in Pretoria. The Tshwane University of Technology made available its facilities for the Workshop and provided hospitality to the participants.
The workshop was attended by about 60 representatives from the CHE/HEQC, higher education institutions as well as the Australian Pro-Vice Chancellors, Proff Geoff Scott, Gail Hart and Sharon Bell.
Prof. Gail Hart of the University of Tasmania discussed the Australian University of Technology Experience and then Prof. Roy du Pré of the Vaal University of Technology gave a presentation on the South African University of Technology (UoT) Experience.
Prof. Errol Tyobeka, Vice Chancellor of TUT discussed the implications for change in the three core functions at Universities of Technology. Prof. Tyobeka said that the Universities of Technology are facing many challenges creating institutional ties and there should be a vigorous debate about the name change from technikons to universities, in South Africa.
