HEQSF Alignment: Category B submission and processes
The CHE is now prepared to move into the second phase of HEQSF alignment and inform institutions of the plan to process Category B programmes. The CHE has drafted a template for the collection of information for the evaluation of Category B programmes. This will include the applications submitted by institutions and those re-categorised by the CHE in the first phase of evaluations. This template is now available to institutions in Word format them to immediately commence collection and preparation of the information for Category B programmes that needs to be submitted to the CHE by mid-2013.

HEQSF Early Bird Submission Deadline Extension
The Council on Higher Education has decided to extend the Early Bird deadline for the submission of HEQSF Implementation data until 14 November 2011 to allow institutions still wishing to submit their HEQSF Implementation data this year to do so.
Institutions are reminded that submission is a four-step process. Institutions are required to (1) capture data onto the offline HEQSF Implementation Template; (2) upload captured data on the HEQSF-Online system (http://heqsf-online.che.ac.za); (3) edit uploaded data on the HEQSF-Online system; and (4) submit completed data to the CHE via the HEQSF-Online system.

Director's letter: An update on HEQSF implementation
As you are aware, the CHE is currently implementing a plan for the alignment of all existing programmes with the HEQSF, a project that is envisaged to take until 2015 at the earliest to complete. Phase one has involved the submission of data on institutions' current offerings categorised into A, B and C categories. Institutions have been collecting data in spreadsheet formats, which they will then submit onto the HEQSFonline system.

Nominations for the HEQSF Category A Working Group
Due to the interest shown and number of nominations received for the HEQSF Category A Working Group, the HEQC has decided to extend the final deadline for receipt of nominations to this working group. All nomination slips and CVs should be submitted to the by 17h00 on or before 7 October 2011.

Joint DHET-CHE communique: The implementation of the new policy on teacher education qualifications
The new policy on The Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ) has been approved and was published by the Minister of Higher Education and Training in Government Gazette No 34467 on 15 July 2011.

HEQSF-Online and Extension of HEQSF Implementation Submission Dates
The HEQSF-Online is now live and is available at http://heqsf-online.che.ac.za. Similarly, version 7 of the HEQSF Implementation Template is also available on the HEQSF-Online webpage or http://www.che.ac.za/heqsf/. Institutional administrators and users will be able to access the HEQSF-Online as for the HEQC-Online, making use of the same usernames and passwords.
Given the vast number of programme submissions anticipated for the HEQSF Implementation process, the CHE has decided to permit two dates by when to receive the submission of HEQSF Implementation forms from institutions. Early Bird submissions will be received on or before 31 October 2011. Late submissions will be received on or before 15 January 2012.
A communique detailing these and other matters relating to the implementation of the HEQSF will be issued to institutions in due course. Any queries should be directed to or 012 349 3852.
