The Higher Education Act, No. 101 of 1997 (reference:
Higher Education Act 101 of 1997) sets out the roles and responsibilities of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and its permanent committee, the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC), with regard to policy and quality assurance related matters in the higher education sector.
From its inception, the CHE has strongly believed that auditing higher education institutions' quality assurance systems and accrediting their programmes must be accompanied by a process to promote quality awareness and capacity. It was for this reason that the
Quality Promotion and Capacity Development Directorate was established.
The Quality Promotion and Capacity Development Directorate carries out its work through a range of processes. Currently it runs the following projects:
