In 2012 the Council on Higher Education (CHE) launched VitalStats in an effort to provide recent, audited and useful information for the higher education sector. The general response to the publication was very positive and the CHE has followed up with VitalStats: Public Higher Education, 2011.

Standards aim to provide institutions with benchmarks for qualifications that may be used for internal quality assurance as well as external comparison. For HEQC quality assurance, standards will be part of the criteria used in the process.

Universities and private higher education institutions are engaged in offering short courses that do not lead to qualifications or part qualifications on the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF). These courses serve different developmental purposes to the participants. To the institutions themselves, the offering of such short courses provides an avenue for community or societal engagement and income generation. The income generation imperative, it would appear, is in ascendancy, given the resource constrained environment in which institutions have to operate.

The Council on Higher Education’s Policies on the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer, and assessment in higher education sets out to provide higher education institutions with appropriate directives and procedures for the development, application and assessment of the effectiveness of their internal mechanisms in relation to RPL, CAT and assessment.
