October, 2005

Quality assurance in higher education is a statutory responsibility of the Council on Higher Education (CHE), carried out through the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC).

An article in the Sunday Times newspaper of 23 October 2005 wrongly indicated the involvement of the HEQC in an investigation, commissioned by the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The HEQC would like to make it clear that it was not commissioned by the University of KwaZulu-Natal to undertake any study and that it did not produce the report indicated in the Sunday Times. The report was produced by Prof Hugh Africa, acting in his private capacity.

The HEQC conducts institutional audits to evaluate the effectiveness of internal quality assurance mechanisms. It also undertakes programme accreditation, quality promotion and quality related capacity development.
