Presentation by Prof. André du Toit (University of Cape Town) at the Colloquium on 10 Years of Democracy and Higher Education Change held 10 to 12 November 2004.

I propose consideration of a range of relevant ideal-typical variations in a thought experiment aimed at clarifying some basic concepts. Note that it is the point of these ideal types that in their “pure” form they do not correspond to any actually existing institutions of higher education. They are to be considered as aides to clarify our thinking.
