Introduction

Part of the HEQC's Quality Systems Restructuring Project, the workshop was hosted by the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) at the Tshwane University of Technology (Pretoria campus). Aimed primarily at promoting institutional research and developing staff capacity in merged institutions and historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs), the workshop was also attended by representatives of the other public higher education institutions. It was a follow-up to the HEQC's workshop held on 26-27 November 2007, entitled Enhancing Quality in Merged Institutions: The Role of the Management Information System (MIS), and to its recent initiative to award grants to merged institutions and HDIs to promote institutional research and to develop capacity.
