Leadership in Higher Education by Dr Allyn Shaw, 21 May 2014

This workshop will be aimed at leaders in Higher Education institutions and specifically at staff developers from different institutions.

Allyn Shaw, Ph.D., is the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Michigan State University. In this position, he assists with the overseeing of 14 units in the division and representing the University when needed. The Division is undergoing a major transformation with the realignment of functions to better serve the students, staff, faculty and partners. Transitions, leadership development and experiential learning are some of the functions in which Shaw specializes.

After serving nine years, as the Associate Director, Office of Faculty and Organizational Development and Director of Leadership Development Programs, he transitioned to the new position six months ago. He had worked in the Office of Faculty and Organizational Development since June 2004. He coordinated the leadership and organizational development programs including the LEAD (LEadership and ADministrator) Seminars, Workshops for Faculty Leaders, Faculty Emeriti Association, Executive Leadership Academy Seminars, and the CIC-ALP Fellows, among others. In 2013, Allyn was awarded the MSU Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award.

In February 2014, Shaw, along with Deborah DeZure and Julie Rojewski, published, “Cultivating the Next Generation of Academic Leaders” in Change Magazine. Allyn, as part of the MSU research team with Deborah DeZure, Roger Baldwin were named recipients of the 2007 Robert Menge’s Award for Outstanding Research in Faculty Development for their "Study of Mid-Career Faculty: Implications for Practice" by the Professional and Organisational Development Network in Higher Education. Also, in 2007, Allyn and his colleagues in Academic Human Resources and Human Resources at MSU were recipients of the Best Practices Award by the Midwest College and University Professional Association for Human Resources for the MSU Executive Leadership Academy, an innovative leadership development program. In 2009, Allyn and his MSU colleagues Cindi Young and Deb DeZure won the 2009 POD Innovation Award for a Mid-Career Faculty Orientation - "From Associate Professor to Professor: Productive Decision-Making at Mid-Career. " In 2010, Allyn and DeZure were again finalists for the POD Innovation Award.
